VIDEO FEATURE – Hog-eyed Man’s “The Surround / Foxhunter’s Jug”
In grand celebration of Tiki Parlour Recordings’ 29th release, Hog-eyed Man’s Kicked Up a Devil of a Row, I decided to release a new video from one of Georgia’s mightiest stringbands. I shot this during their recording session at the Tiki Parlour during the pandemic. The CD features Clifftop fiddle contest winner Jason Cade and innovative multi-instrumentalist Rob McMaken, with guest appearances by Maxine Gerber (banjo), Brendan Doyle (banjo), and yours truly on guitar.
The Surround / Foxhunter’s Jug
Key of D
Jason Cade – fiddle (ADAE); Rob McMaken – dulcimer (DAD); Brendan Doyle– banjo (aDADE)
This particular video is for their track, “The Surround/Foxhunter’s Jug.” These are two traditional tunes Jason picked up during extended stays in Dublin and County Clare, Ireland, back in the 1990s, now much corrupted with the passage of time and taste. Versions of both tunes were collected in a 19th century Irish manuscript by James Goodman (b. 1828) from the blind piper Tom Kennedy, both of whom learned their music growing up in the Dingle Peninsula area of County Kerry, Ireland. The second tune is originally called “Foxhunter’s Jig,” but a small titular modification seemed within bounds along with the changed time signature and context. As everyone knows, the jug is an essential part of any good fox hunt.
