Camp Zydecow
A Cajun music and dance weekend in Downeast Maine!!

JimmyJo and the Jumbol’Ayuhs
Hi folks, So, two months ago I had just gotten back from “Camp Zydecow” (not a typo), in Cherryfield, Maine. I was very impressed with a Zydeco band, “Le Winston Band,” from Montreal and did a really short blurb on them with a video. There were a lot more bands, including my own, JimmyJo and the Jumbol’Ayuhs, but the other headliner was Bruce Daigrepont and Gina Forsythe from New Orleans. I took a lot of video of these two bands but back then my internet service was so bad it took hours and hours to upload a video to YouTube. Hah hah, just recently, I finally got hi-speed fiber internet here in rural Maine and upload times went from a couple hours to less than a minute for an average video. So I thought it would be a good idea to flaunt my new capability and give you all some fun stuff to watch. You’ll see a selection of videos at the end of this blog.

But first, I really want to say something about Camp Zydecow. It is the brain child of Su Peck who owns a house in Cherryfield, well a couple houses, actually. Most attendees camp out or stay in a local motel in Millbridge, and some of the performers get their own rooms. What’s in Cherryfield, Maine? Not much. The major industry is the farming of low-bush Maine blueberries, and of course, it’s close enough to the coast that lobster fishing figures into the economy. This is a way of saying Cherryfield is not where you would expect a Cajun Zydeco music festival. Folks come from all over North America and the bands are mostly from New England, with the above mentioned headliners from away. The “main stage” is on Su’s back porch and there is a small dance floor. Add to that real Maine “lobster bake” on Saturday evening, And this is quite an event!!!
There ya go folks! Enjoy – see you next month
