volume 4
Kieran Kane and Rayna Gellert
I’ve known Rayna Gellert since 1998, and I’ve seen her duo with Kieran Kane perform live online. This, as the title suggests, is their fourth recording together. It was released in April 2025. Kieran Kane painted the cover painting. He plays guitar and sings. Rayna plays fiddle and guitar and also sings. Lucas Kane plays drum in an unobtrusive manner. I only hear him on “Muddy Roads.” There are six original songs plus two traditional fiddle tunes and one fiddle tune they composed.
The first song, “I Can’t Wait,” has both of them playing guitar and singing with Kieran singing lead. It appears to be cowritten by Kieran along with two others named Locke and Scott. “Watcha Gonna Do About It” is by both Kieran and Rayna plus David Francey. “The Mansion Above” was written by Kieran. “Saddle Up the Grey” is a powerfully rhythmic fiddle tune from the Mississippi band the Carter Brothers and Son. It has some lyrics that they don’t sing such as “Saddle up the grey, don’t let him get away, ain’t gonna be no supper here today.” “Short Con” is written by both Kieran and Rayna. Rayna sings lead. “Imagine That” was written by Kieran with Jamie O’Hara. “Muddy Roads” was popularized by North Carolina fiddler Gaither Carlton, who was Doc Watson’s father-in-law. “Keep My Heart in Mind” is again written by Kieran and Jamie O’Hara. “Turkey in the Tee Box” is a fiddle tune written by Kieran and Rayna.
A great duo relies on a kind of instinctive union between two singers and players. The first time I heard Kieran and Rayna together, it was obvious that they were perfectly suited to sing and play together. Their song writing is also superb. The three fiddle tunes showcase Rayna’s pulsing fiddle bow.
