NEW CD: New Roads by Joyce Pan and David Aks
Joyce and David come from similar classical backgrounds, but they met in The Scottish Fiddlers of Los Angeles where they were both discovering the amazing world of Celtic Fiddling. Never having played this music before, the learning curve was steep. But what they found was a world of extraordinary musicians playing music that was full of life, passion and unbridled joy.
Because of its origins as dance music, there is a rhythmic drive and foot-stomping excitement (yes, it’s not only OK to stomp your feet, but it’s encouraged!) that is usually absent in the classical world. Joyce and David admitted they both had latent Jazz and Rock tendencies in their musical souls, and then discovered there were a whole lot of great players who shared these tendencies and who were busy producing genre-bending music that is best described as Contemporary Celtic.
They were greeted by a beautifully expansive definition of what it means to be a musician in which people often play multiple instruments and write their own tunes. The world of Fiddle Camps put them in touch with players who could not only inspire, but also teach and mentor them.
This album is a first stop on their journey to explore this amazing music, and it will undoubtedly not be their last.
