Remembering 9/11 in Song
As I write today, it is the day after our September 11 remembrances across the country and across the world.
Every year as we remember and, in some cases, re-live, the grief and terror of that unbelievable day, we do so with the support of artistic reflections and artworks created to honor the slain and give thanks for the heroes that were made that day.
As I write to you, my mind and heart are filled with the glory of the human heart’s ability to grieve outwardly, and the human being’s skill to express this grief in terms that we can all be changed by. This week’s blog entry will be a brief sharing of two artworks in song that move me beyond words:
At the 9/11 memorial event in New York City, Bruce Springsteen performed his new song “I’ll See You In My Dreams.” As usual for Springsteen, his eloquence is unmistakable poetry. Here is the live performance!
For those of you who want to get the lyrics to this song, Bruce also recorded a music video version of the tune here.
Alternatively, a song that’s been performed for 9/11 memorials for many years is a song from the Broadway theatre world, from the musical “Carousel.” The song is “You’ll Never Walk Alone.” At the same memorial service in New York, soprano Kelli O’Hara performed this for the audience which included President Biden.
I hope that you, too, can find solace in song and healing through music. I know from my own life that this is real and can work miracles. Find your song or songs and sing out now, in remembrance and grace.
See you next time for more on voice production, performance and storytelling in song.
Thanks for reading!
Blessings and love,
Susie
