There’s Something Strange About Linda’s Voice…

Obsessive Compulsive Musical Revelations - Henry Zhao

Linda Ronstadt Performing

There are a lot of beautiful voices floating around the music scene, and brilliant wordsmiths and lyricists. Oftentimes my higher, analytical brain categorizes certain artists as great singers or writers but my lower brain doesn’t give me the urge to want to listen to them again.

There are other artists that the higher conscious brain seems to deem as poor singers or simplistic lyrically. For some reason though, at most there is a subconscious, mystical element and at least there is a great degree of subtlety in their performance that eludes conscious understanding but impacts the senses nonetheless. The result is that they have an influence that one can’t help but feel but can not consciously explain.

It’s the kind of thing that sounds crazy but makes sense once you feel it. The extreme attention to detail that brings someone from 99.8% quality of 99.9% is probably what separates from Mozart from his contemporaries. It’s a subtle “something” that separates genius from the rest, something that cuts to our souls but is beyond our conscious comprehension. We don’t know why Linda Ronstadt’s singing stays with us even though there are other singers with a broader range or cleaner voice. That’s the magic of it. Maybe she knows or maybe she doesn’t either. But there’s something. It’s no accident.
