Protest Downeast Style
Woody Sung, Windborne Sings
Hi folks,
This one will be short but fun. This past weekend, March 27-29 was the annual DownEast Country Dance Festival in Topsham, Maine. The event was scheduled about a year ago, so there was no way we could have known it would coincide with “No Kings Day.” But around 5 in the afternoon on Saturday when the dance floor was being cleaned, everyone went outside to join the protest with a ten minute sing. I had to stay in because I was helping callers get ready for the contra medley which was up next. Anyway dancing is probably not a bad way to “protest” these days. Here’s my latest favorite protest song, actually composed by Woody Guthrie in 1946.
More recently the Windborne Singers from Massachusetts sort of “updated” the song with a few new verses!
