TWENTY–ONE REVIEWED CONCERTS, CDS AND BOOKS
VOICES THAT MADE A DIFFERENCE AND STOOD UP FOR A BETTER AMERICA IN 2017
By Ross Altman, PhD
At year end I celebrate the roots-based artists and musicians who have made a difference and stood up for a better America in 2017. They give concerts, they make CDs and they write books—all of which have been reviewed in these pages. We don’t hear their names very often—none of them have been on the front page of the LA Times, the New York Times, or the Washington Post. They travel around the country, guitar, banjo and fiddle in hand and they sing and make music—the people’s music—carrying on a tradition that goes back to the ancient minstrels and lyre-playing Orpheus—a part of what the late great Leonard Cohen called The Tower of Song.
Here they are—let us keep their precious names in mind to remind us of the better angels of our nature and what America has yet to become—the land of the free and home of the brave—except for the firefighters—who are—as Tom Paxton wrote—“The Bravest.” Support FolkWorks Folk/Roots Festival next March 24.
