Virtual “Tricks, Treats and Guising – the Celtic Roots of Halloween!” with Dr. Gary West

October 30 - October 31

Virtual Event Virtual Event
$20 – $25

Please join us for a virtual event as Dr. Gary West explores “Tricks, Treats and Guising – the Celtic Roots of Halloween!

The children are digging out the fancy dress and brushing up on their tricks in search of treats. And no doubt some adults are too! It must be Halloween! But what is the festival all about? Why do we dress up, and as we say in Scotland, go ‘guising’? What’s the significance of the supernatural references, to witches, ghosts and the darker side of life? Yes, it is the eve of the Christian celebration of All Saints or All Hallows day, yet the roots of these rituals go back much deeper into the pre-Christian Celtic world. Dr. Gary West takes us on a journey to discover these roots, and those of other Celtic festivals and celebrations too. With appropriate poems, stories, songs and tunes along the way, prepare to be entertained – and terrified – in equal measure!

Our 2020 programming had to radically change course early in the year, but one great thing that came from it is our Gary West Video Collection! Gary, newly retired as a professor of Celtic Studies at the University of Edinburgh, takes viewers through a wide range of topics on Scottish history and culture. From the history of Highland Games celebrations to a travelogue across Scotland’s rich landscape, Gary captures his viewer’s attention with both beautiful scenery and enchanting music. For anyone who wants to catch up, the complete 2020 collection is available for purchase in our Celtic Arts Web Store!

Information about cancellations, refunds, and exchanges can be found on our Ticket Policy page.
