Practical magic is the lifeblood of Doran, a spectacular new quartet composed of four musicians long situated on the fringes of American folk, all of them singers and multi-instrumentalists. Singer and banjo-player Elizabeth Laprelle (of Anna and Elizabeth), multi-media performance artists and musicians Channing Showalter and Annie Schermer (West of Roan), and ethnomusicologist and multi-instrumentalist Brian Dolphin draw from their respective work in story, song, archetype and image, and advance it into an untapped experimental terrain that is newly raw, wintry, moody, and tender. Influences can be heard from group’s strong background in traditional Appalachian ballad singing, Eastern European choral music, Celtic folklore, and improvisation.
The in-person concert at the Phinney Center takes place at 7:30pm on Saturday, May 7th. Online viewing tickets will also be available for this show, with viewing allowed until 7pm Tuesday, May 17th. Once viewing has begun, it is possible to continue or re-watch for a 24 hour period within this time
