    Carolyn Russell

    (-July 21, 2019)

Carolyn RussellCarolyn Russell died of a stroke at her Apple Valley home on July 21, 2019.

The bio for Carolyn Russell is very sketchy. She was a Board member of the California Dance Cooperative, and through that organization ran a Cajun Dance at the Culver City Masonic Temple.

Per the L.A. Times article of October 3, 1986 she was at that time a member of  Louisiana Cajun Trio.

    Peter Romano

    (April 19, 1959 - July 25, 2019)

    By Mark Romano

Peter RomanoMusician, contractor and sailor, Peter delighted in all of these, but he delighted mostly in those people around him. A member of, at various times, Big Red Sky, The Brilliant Gypsies, Falling Star, The Ploughboys, and Room Service, Peter left an indelible mark on the Southern California music scene.

    Bea Romano

    (July 29, 1947-July 22, 2019)

By Larry Wines (Acoustic Americana Guide)

Bea RomanoIt is with heavy hearts we share word of the passing of Beatrice Platt Romano, who left us on Monday, July 22nd. If you did not know Bea, you should wish you did.

    Twice, Bea performed on CNN.

Nobody is quite sure how many instruments Bea played. The list includes Hammered Dulcimer, Autoharp, Psaltery, Shakers, Limberjacks, and Spoons, for certain. She could jump in, without hesitation, to produce Irish jigs, reels and hornpipes, and Old Time American fiddle, rag, bluegrass and waltz tunes.

    Play On

    By Art Podell

art paulSony Music (Columbia Records) recently re-released the original recordings made by myself and my partner at the time, Paul Potash. We were known as Art and Paul and our era was the early popular folk music revival – 1960 / 1961. I’ve written both serious and humorous vignettes about our experiences and escapades in this publication. We were well known in Greenwich Village and later here on the west coast and we were the very first folk music act to play the Troubadour when it was about to close. We broke up late in 1961 but we apparently left a mark on the music world and Sony Music has elected to memorialize us with the digital re-release of our two albums (today’s CD sales are diminishing ever so swiftly).

    ARTIST: Sarah Rogo

    TITLE: Smoke and Water

    LABEL: Funzalorecords

    RELEASE DATE: September 13, 2019

    By Art Podell

SARAH ROGO Smoke and WaterSarah Rogo showed up recently at a round table jam group I play with. John S. who hosts our group had spotted her in the parking lot of the place we jam. She was carrying a guitar case, so he invited her to join us. Makes sense, right? Our group is a weekly gathering of friends who play old-time standards on fiddles, mandolins, guitars and banjos just for the fun of it. After a few turns around the circle, we asked Sarah if she’d like to perform something on her own. She agreed happily, sat forward in her chair, tucked her chin in, closed her eyes, cradled her National guitar, and proceeded to mesmerize us with a passionate blues, dancing the beat with her bare feet, while the glass slide-bar on her left little finger whined the changes.

    TITLE: Sing With Me

    ARTIST: Tracy Newman

    LABEL: Run Along Home

    RELEASE DATE: June 21, 2019

    By Russ Paris

Tracy Newman Sing With MeWhen I heard that Tracy Newman was coming out with another children’s CD, I was excited. It’s not that I’m particularly into children’s music, but I’ve got grandchildren and they sure know what they like. Fortunately, Tracy is a grandmother too and has transitioned her singer-songwriter energies into creating some of the most enjoyable and creative children’s albums over the past few years.

    NEVENKA WOMEN'S FOLK CHORUS

Here’s a show like no other that the Pasadena Folk Music Society has offered. Nevenka is a Los Angeles-based women’s folk chorus performing songs from Eastern Europe, including Russian, Bulgarian, Croatian, Greek and others. The group formed in 1976 as an off-shoot of the Aman Folk Ensemble. These women are primarily singers, and there may be over a dozen of them on stage! The singers span 30 years in age, and are a close-knit family with a strong team concept. Performing a delightful mix of roots music and composed pieces, they represent the great diversity within these East European countries. Considering that their music includes non-western rhythms and scales, be aware these are not simple pop songs, but deeply satisfying traditional folk music from the Balkans area. Come be transported in time and place to experience this spirited music!
